Special Educational Needs (SEN):

Here at Mercenfeld Primary School we have a commitment to inclusive practice and all staff work hard to meet the individual needs of our pupils so that they are supported to be the best that they can be.

At any point in their school life a child may have Special Educational Needs (SEN). At Mercenfeld, we use the definition for SEN from the SEND Code of Practice (2014) 

This states that: “A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of the same age in a mainstream setting in England”.

These needs may fall within one or more of the following areas;

Communication and Interaction
Cognition and Learning
Social, Emotional and Mental Health
Sensory and Physical needs

At Mercenfeld we aim to:

  • Provide a happy and secure environment in which all pupils can feel positive about themselves.
  • Ensure that all pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum which enables them to develop to their full potential intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially.
  • Ensure that the special educational needs of our pupils are identified and carefully monitored through our monitoring and tracking systems.
  • Skilfully adapt teaching to meet pupils’ special educational needs.
  • Ensure pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or disability have full access to the National Curriculum, the wider school curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
  • Make clear the roles and responsibilities of staff in providing for pupils’ special educational needs.
  • Develop co-operation and communication with parents and supporting agencies.
  • Ensure that parents are able to play their part in supporting their child’s education.
  • Ensure that pupils have a voice in the process.
